WARRENSBURG-With the recent flurry of developers planning shopping plazas in and near Warrensburg, and businesses taking steps to locate in town, area officials are now predicting a local economic resurgence here.
"We weathered the economic downturn fairly well, and now we're seeing the beginning of a rebound," Warrensburg Town Supervisor Kevin Geraghty said Monday.
In January, news surfaced that two developers had bought options to buy large plots of land - one on North Main St. and the other, near Northway Exit 23 - to develop shopping plazas. The latter, just south of town, was to accommodate a large Price Chopper supermarket, a bank branch and several other retail stores, area government officials said. The former plot of land, just behind the Warrensburg post office, was also to be developed for a supermarket or another chain enterprise and retail stores.
Meanwhile, town planners have been busy reviewing plans for businesses to move into several vacant Main Street stores - including a bicycle retail and repair outlet combined with a coffee shop at the former Brown Shoes/Tamarack Shop location near the memorial bandstand downtown. The other is a physical therapy enterprise to move into the former QVN Motors building on Upper Main St. New Way Lunch of Glens Falls is opening up a satellite branch as soon as mid-May in the former Potters' Diner, a Warrensburg landmark for 86 years.
Next door, the now-vacant former Stewart's Shop has been prompting inquiries from several businesses that seek to move there. Town officials said one is a computer store, the other is Direct Deposit container recycling center, now operated behind LeCount-Cooper Real Estate. Direct Deposit is an enterprise owned by Town Board member Dean Ackley and his brother Lou Ackley.
Monday, the Ackleys confirmed they were seeking to relocate to a high-profile Main St. location, either in the vacant former Maltbie Chrysler-Dodge building or the former Stewart's Shop convenience store.
