Lake George advances in sectional play

Lake George 54, Waterford 32

SARATOGA SPRINGS - Third-seeded Lake George moved into the Section II semifinals of the Class C Section II basketball tournament Feb. 26 after a lopsided win over Waterford.

And with Cambridge's stunning defeat of top-ranked Argyle - which beat Lake George in an upset a week earlier for the Adirondack League championship - the route to the Sectional Championship became a little more promising.

Against Waterford, Lake George was led by Matt McGowan with a game-high 23 points and 14 rebounds.

The Warriors outscored Waterford 34-13 in the second and third quarters.

Alex Hladik sunk nine from the line and tallied 13 points for the Warriors. Erik Jones and Jeff Maldonado scored five points apiece with one three-pointer for Jones. Matt Stover and J.D. Jenkins added four points each in the win.

Matt Berthayme led Waterford with 18 points.

Tuesday, Lake George was scheduled to battle with No. 2 seeded Fort Plain, which last week had squeaked past No. 7-seeded Mayfield. The winner of the Lake George-Fort Plain matchup goes up against the winner of the Tuesday game between 8th-seed Cambridge and No. 4 Greenwich for the Section II Class C Championship. The game will be played at 3:45 p.m. Saturday in the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Lake George 73, Duanesburg 46

LAKE GEORGE - Warrior Matt McGowan "Jimmerized" the competition in the opening round of Section II Class C tournament Feb. 23 as he scored no less than 37 points and tallied 15 rebounds in Lake Georges victory over Duanesburg.
