MIDDLEBURY-Voters here will soon decide whether to approve the new Mary Hogan Elementary School budget. The 2011-12 budget is a 2.2 percent increase over the current one.
The vote will be determined April 13 at 7 p.m., in the school gymnasium. The new school budget to be presented to voters is $5,899,867.
The proposed budget was presented by school officials in the best light possible last month. Emphasis placed not on the 2.2 percent increase itself, but rather on several "reductions"-such as the decline in the local education/homestead property tax rate (down only a penny from the current budget) and a decrease in per-student spending (down only $142 per student currently).
The budget is being presented to voters as is-without either cutting or adding new staff and faculty or burdening the budget with new programs and activities.
