Burlington planning July 3 celebration

BURLINGTON - The City of Burlington has extended an invitation to surrounding communities to help celebrate July 4 a day early. On July 3, city officials plan a big Independence Day bash to celebrate America and the slowly dropping water level of Lake Champlain.

The July 3 program includes food, fun and fireworks after sunset with the lake as a spectacular backdrop. The bash is being coordinated by the Burlington Parks & RecreationDepartment.

Event schedule includes:

Perkins Pier

Broadcasting with Radio stations, 4-8 p.m. Lawn green area.

•Concert:Blue Gardenias, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

•Concert:Rick and the Ramblers, 8-9:30 p.m.

•Strolling entertainment and stilt walkers, 5:30-9 pm

Waterfront Festival Site

(Follow signs to Promenade Area)

•Famous 2001 Giant Patriot Flag display-displayed coast-to-coast in honor of a Vermont patriot-includes flag-raising ceremony, 1 p.m. Patriot Flag dignified transfer from the US Border to Police and Fire Honor Guards, 1:05 p.m. Flag raising with Vermont Police and Fire honor guards.

•Introduction and Pledge of Allegiance, 1:15 p.m.

•Benediction by Rev. John Feltz 1:20 p.m.

•National Anthem (Green Mountain Chorus), 1:25 p.m.

•Remarks by San Diego Firefighter/Paramedic Mitch Mendler, co-founder of the Patriot's Flag, 1:30 p.m.

•Music by Green Mountain Choir and John Middleton and the New England Tenors, 1:45 p.m.

•March to the Burlington Community Boathouse, 2:20 p.m.

•Dignified Transfer of the Colors to the Red Knights.2:25 p.m. Promenade

•Flag departs for Montpelier, Rutland

•Inflatable jousting, obstacle course, large bouncer, 8 p.m.

•Hopper Bounce, 4-9 p.m.

•Amy's World Amusement Rides, noon- 9:20 pm. Variety of carnival rides

•Strolling Entertainment, 4-9 p.m.

•Face Painting 6-9 p.m

•Dan Marcotte Airshow, 8:30-8:45 p.m. in sky above waterfront.

•Pulse of Boston, 8-9:30 p.m. (Boathouse Deck).

While on the waterfront, visit ECHO Science Museum at the Leahy Center for Lake Champlain and the Lake Champlain Navy Memorial. in nearby Hoehl Park.

Battery Park

•Burlington Concert Band, 7-9 p.m. Concert Band Shell.

•Pony Rides-Free, 5:30-8:30 p.m.

•Fireworks: spectacular display of pyrotechnics over Lake Champlain; event starts after dark.
