Police in Saranac Lake are investigating a bizarre fire that was set late last week near the Petrova Middle School.
Saranac Lake Village Police Chief Bruce Nason says emergency personnel received reports of a fire on the overpass above LaPan Highways at about 10:30 Friday evening.
One truck and eight members from the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department arrived at the scene and discovered the blaze, which was promptly extinguished.
"Someone called in a report that the overpass was on fire," Nason told WNBZ. "It appears that gasoline was poured on a section of the overpass and then lit."
According to Nason, the resulting damage was minimal.
"It's a concrete and metal structure, and the fire didn't get hot enough to do damage to the structure itself," he said.
A gas can found at the scene was damaged, which Nason says could lead to arson charges.
"We don't have any leads at this point," he said. "If anyone saw or heard anything in the area, we ask them to contact us immediately."
Fire and rescue personnel were back in service by about 12:40 a.m. Saturday.
