Cops: SL man choked woman, prevented rescue call

A Saranac Lake man was taken into custody yesterday evening after he allegedly choked a woman and prevented her from calling the cops.

Saranac Lake Village Police arrested 21-year-old Julius E. Barreto at 8:01 p.m. Thursday and charged him with criminal obstruction of breathing, second-degree unlawful imprisonment, and unlawful possession of marijuana.

During an investigation into a domestic dispute, police learned that Barreto choked a woman and subsequently prevented her from leaving the residence.

He's also alleged to have barred her from using a telephone.

While being taken into custody, police found him to be in possession of a small amount of marijuana.

Barreto was processed at the police station in Saranac Lake and later arraigned in village court before Justice Ken McLaughlin.

He was released on his own recognizance to reappear in village court in July. An order of protection was issued to the victim.
