Troopers: Woman fell asleep at wheel, drove off road

A local woman fell asleep behind the wheel and drove off the roadway, resulting in minor injuries.

The Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded to a one-car motor vehicle accident at about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday.

An official with the fire department told WNBZ that two trucks and six members responded to a location on state Route 3 in the town of Franklin, where they found a car that had driven off the road.

A trooper with New York State Police in Ray Brook says Cynthia J. Smith of Saranac Lake apparently nodded off before the accident occurred.

Smith suffered only minor injuries, troopers say.

Fire and rescue personnel were back in service by approximately 6:15 p.m.

No additional information was immediately available Thursday morning.
