Middlebury museum to host music, picnics, fireworks

MIDDLEBURY - Middlebury's Sheldon Museum will celebrate the Fourth of July a little early again this year with a pops concert scheduled on Thursday, June 30.

Now in its 18th year, the pops concert will feature the award-winning Georgia Brass Band followed by fabulous fireworks. The Georgia Brass Band will presents a diverse repertoire of classical music, jazz tunes, movie themes, and stirring marches. This concert is designed as a family event.

Joe Johnson, the band's music director and one of its founders, said that July 4 audience members in Middlebury should "plan on a few classic marches such as Carnival King and Stars and Stripes. There will also be a good dose of patriotic and American music, as well as some items that will feature soloists from the band."

The Georgia Brass Band is a British-style brass band from Atlanta, Ga., but not all the GBB band members are originally from Georgia. Tuba player Tom Day hails from Middlebury. The concert will take place on the grounds behind the Mahaney Center for the Arts at Middlebury College (rain site: Kenyon Arena).

The grounds open at 5:30 p.m. for picnicking with your friends and family. Concert begins at 7:30. Attendees may bring picnic baskets, lawn chairs and blankets to the event.

Ticket prices: Adult $25 ($20 through June 18), Youth $10; children under 12 admitted free. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Sheldon at 802-388-2117, online at www.henrysheldonmuseum.org or in person at the Sheldon, 1 Park St., in Middlebury.
