CHILSON-The Chilson Volunteer Fire Department will celebrate its 50th anniversary by looking back.
Firefighters will celebrate their 50th anniversary with an antique and classic firefighting equipment show at the department's annual barbecue.
The barbecue will be Saturday, July 23, at the fire house at 60 Putts Pond Road in Ticonderoga. Festivities will begin at noon and the barbecue will be served beginning at 2 p.m.
The barbecue, a summer tradition for the Ticonderoga-Chilson community, includes chicken and all the fixins, as well as an afternoon of music, entertainment and fun for the whole family. This year the display of classic fire trucks will be an added attraction. Tickets are $10. All are welcome.
"If you or someone you know has a piece of vintage fire equipment that you would like to display, we'd be very happy to have you join us at our big event," said Stephen E. Phelps, Jr. of the Chilson FD. "We'll award trophies for oldest in show, longest in service, longest distance travelled to be with us, and even a people's choice trophy to be voted on at the barbecue."

Formed in 1960, the Chilson squad covers a 30-square-mile area that includes Putts Pond and a portion of Eagle Lake. The fire district includes large tracts of state-owned property that have required Chilson firefighters to battle forest fires in the past.
The Chilson Volunteer Fire Department serves Chilson and provides mutual aid to surrounding departments. The department is staffed and equipped to provide fire prevention, fire protection and rescue services, including vehicle extrications, and does much more.
Each October firefighters go house-to-house in the community giving away smoke detectors and batteries while delivering fire safety information. The company also assists during weather emergencies, cleaning downed trees from road ways and bringing generators to home-bound residents.
The Chilson FD holds a pair of major fund raising events each year - a dinner and dance in February and a chicken barbecue in July.
The department also owns the Chilson Community Center. The community center, located across the street from the fire house, is an emergency shelter and also serves to host community functions.
