New farmers' market

Bolton now has its own farmers' market, and it will debut Friday, July 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church. The farmers and vendors participating will be offering locally grown fruit and produce, maple syrup products, roasted coffee, baked goods, and cut flowers. The market is to be held through summer, ending on Sept. 2. Come meet and talk with the local growers. The Bolton Landing Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the market, run by Eva Bird and Cobber Pratt.

Home in landslide, girlfriends help

Diane Williams from New Smyrna, Fla. and Bolton Landing arranged to attend the Girlfriends Getaway event in May at The Sagamore Resort with two of her dearest friends.

They have been closest of friends since they met at freshman orientation at Keuka College. The four of them in all refer to themselves as the "Keuka Kuties."

On May 6, one of the women, Charity Marlatt, found that the earth was washing away from under their mountainside home in Keene Valley so she would not be attending the weekend. During the event, Diane Williams and Sherrill Valdes from Ft. Lauderdale learned how devastating the disaster was for their dear friend - the Marlatt's home was sliding down the mountain. Diane and Sherrill didn't think twice: these two girlfriends left their weekend of pampering to go to the aid of a woman they have known for 49 years. Aside from offering emotional support, they helped pack up the Marlatt's household goods so they could move out before it was condemned. Diane and Sherrill said afterwards they were thankful that they were attending the Getaway so they could help the Marlatts in time of need, Diane said.

"Our friendship has been strong through good times and bad - weddings, funerals, sickness, divorce, grandchildren for all of us and now, this landslide," she said. "If not there in person, we are all on the phone."
