Lawmakers have passed a bill that extends legislation exempting renters of Jet Skis and other personal watercraft from having to take a state-sponsored boater safety certification course.
The bill, sponsored in the state Senate by Betty Little, extends the sunset date on similar legislation that has been enacted numerous times over the last decade.
"This is a limited exemption that allows people to rent Jet Skis and other personal watercraft and operate them without having taken a boater safety certification course," Little said in an emailed statement.
"It's important to many marinas and businesses and supportive of tourism not only in the North Country but throughout the state," she added.
According to language contained within the legislation, users of personal watercraft must keep within 2,500 feet of the rental location.
Governor Andrew Cuomo is expected to sign the bill into law, extending it through 2013.
