Youthful Lions fall in D softball final, Bombers blue after walk-off slam

PLATTSBURGH - After two close contests, the Lady Panthers jumped out early and cruised to an 18-2 victory over the Lady Lions June 3, again defending their Section VII/Class D title.

The Panthers scored in each of the first four innings, then scored nine runs in the sixth inning to close the door on the Lions.

Lindsay Brace collected four hits in the game, scoring three runs and driving in five. Brace also closed out the game for the Panthers on the mound, striking out seven and allowing only one hit in the final three innings.

Chelsea DuShane started on the mound for the Panthers, striking out six in four innings of work while allowing two runs. She also had two hits and a pair of runs batted in, including a double.

Ashley Morgan had a pair of doubles and two runs batted in, while Hailey White had two hits and runs driven in and Amanda Wolf had two hits and drove one run home. Every started got on base at least twice for the Panthers, with Taylor Booth the only player not to record a hit (walked twice, scored once).

For the Lions, Kaitlin Coats scored the opening run of the game for the team, scoring as a courtesy runner on a triple by Clare Harwood. Kearsten Ashline scored the Lions other run on a wild pitch.

Ashline, Harwood, Alyssa Sullivan and Kylee Cassavaugh had the only hits for the Lions.

Class C finals

Ticonderoga 6, Lake Placid 5

A pitchers' duel turned into an offensive explosion in the Class C championship game between the Lady Sentinels and Lady Blue Bombers June 1, with the biggest blast being saved for last.

After Lake Placid scored three runs to break open a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh, Sentinel senior Taylor Ward watched as Melissa Pockett, Autumn Olcott and Andrea Rich all reached on walks. Then, Ward belted a game-ending, walk-off grand slam to give Ticonderoga a one-run edge and the sectional title.
