Conference Center at Lake Placid to hold open house, ribbon cutting

LAKE PLACID-The Conference Center at Lake Placid is welcoming everyone to take a look at the newest "jewel" of the Olympic Village.

"We feel that this is going to be a jewel of conference centers throughout the northeast," Jon Lundin, public relations coordinator for ORDA, said. "It has been a long process, and we have had our ups and downs during the construction phase, but now it is complete."

There will be an open house for the center on Tuesday, June 21, including a ribbon cutting ceremony, between 4 and 6:30 p.m.

The event will include tours of the facility and staff on-hand to answer questions. There will also be hors d' oeuvres from CenterPlate and live music.

"We want people to come and experience the conference center," Lundin said. "This is a tremendous asset to the region and this will give everyone a chance to see what has bee created for them and the region."

The Conference Center has already been busy hosting groups and events, starting with the Mountain Lake Services annual award ceremony and banquet in the conference center's ball room on May 7.

Soon after, the center hosted its biggest event, welcoming Gov. Andrew Cuomo to the Tri-Lakes region.

"That was the biggest highlight that we have had so far," said Lundin. "What he stressed that really hit home to all of us was that he was pleased that this was a project that was on-time and, more importantly, on-budget."

Lundin said that the goal of the conference center is to be a hub for businesses and other organizations to utilize throughout the year.

"This helps us ensure that Lake Placid will be a 12-months out of the year destination," Lundin said.

Construction on the $17-million project began July 2009, and was paid for by Empire State Economic Development funds set aside by Gov. George Pataki before he left office. These funds allowed for the construction with absolutely no debt load on the community.
