Hospice Radio Day aims to raise funds, awareness

The 19th annual High Peaks Hospice Radio Day will take place Tuesday, June 7.

Radio Day will once again broadcast from the Redfield Room of the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake beginning at 6 a.m. and continuing until 8 p.m.

The event will air on several Mountain Communications stations, including AM 920 and 1240 and 105.5 and 102.1 FM. The fundraiser will also broadcast on Time Warner Cable Channel 2.

High Peaks Hospice & Palliative Care is a locally-based nonprofit organization that provides end-of-life care for terminally ill patients, their families, and their friends. The organization relies on financial support from the Tri-Lakes community, and every year, thousands of area residents do their part on Radio Day to keep hospice programs running.

WNBZ News Director Chris Morris will act as on-air host for the event. He'll be joined throughout the day by community members who will share their stories about hospice. Special guests are also slated to appear throughout the day.

In Tupper Lake, Jim LaValley will once again join students at the L.P. Quinn Elementary School to raise funds.

This year's broadcast will also be live-streamed online at www.highpeakshospice.com.

As always, contributors will have an opportunity to take home a variety of gifts and incentives for their generosity. Local businesses have stepped up to the plate, donating dozens of prizes.

Sandy Bandru is development coordinator for High Peaks Hospice & Palliative Care.

"It is so powerful to be there in the moment either in the Redfield Room or from where you happen to be listening," she said.

"The energy is electrifying and inspiring" Bandru added, noting that some people tell her Radio Day should be a holiday.

Among the top prizes this year is a Hornbeck boat, which will be raffled off on the day of the event at about 7:45 p.m.

This year's fundraising goal is $60,000. On-air pledges will be accepted June 7 by calling 897-2443. Pledges can be made anytime by calling 891-0606 extension 125, or online at www.highpeakshospice.com.

Anyone interested in volunteering their time for Radio Day can get involved by calling 891-0606.
