Road work to begin in downtown SL next week

Work crews are getting ready to repave portions of downtown Saranac Lake.

Officials say crews from the village Department of Public Works will begin milling sections of Main Street on Monday. DPW Superintendent Robert Martin says that if all goes well, crews will commence with paving on Tuesday.

Crews began moving equipment into place this week.

The project starts at the intersection of Main Street and Academy Street and continues to the light at the intersection of River Street and LaPan Highway.

Village Manager John Sweeney expects the project to take between three and seven days.

"The DPW crew is approaching the project the same way the Broadway Hill was done last year," Sweeney said in an email. "We plan to get in, get the work done and reopen the road."

After Main Street is finished, Robert Martin says crews will move to Lake Street for milling and paving from Pelkey Lane to View Street, then Catherine Street from Marshall Street to Cliff Avenue, and then Prospect Street from Broadway to Virginia Street.

Officials are telling motorists and pedestrians to expect delays.
