Owens sides with GOP, votes against raising debt ceiling

North Country Congressman Bill Owens sided with Republicans last night, voting against legislation that would raise the federal debt ceiling.

The Democrat from New York's 23rd Congressional District was among a handful of Democrats who sided with the House's GOP majority in voting against the measure.

GOP lawmakers say they forced the vote in order to prove that spending cuts need to be included in any legislation aimed at raising the debt ceiling.

Owens says spending cuts and an expiration of Bush-era tax cuts for families making more than $250,000 must be included in any debt ceiling legislation, or he won't vote for it.
