Owens appointed to House agriculture subcommittees

The Democrat representing New York's 23rd Congressional District has been appointed to a pair of agriculture subcommittees.

Bill Owens will now sit on the House Subcommittee on Conservation, Energy and Forestry; he was also appointed to the House Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy and Poultry.

Owens currently sits on the House Agriculture Committee and the Armed Services Committee.

According to Owens spokesman Sean Magers, the congressman's involvement on the two subcommittees will influence issues critical to the farming community in northern New York.

In a prepared statement, Owens said he's looking forward to becoming more involved in discussions that directly affect the agricultural community in the North Country.

"Upstate family farmers remain a major driver of New York's economy, and I am pleased with the opportunity to represent their interests on these critical subcommittees," he said.

The Subcommittee on Conservation, Energy and Forestry deals with soil, water, and resource conservation, as well as small watershed programs and energy and bio-based production.

That subcommittee also oversees matters relating to rural electrification and forestry.
