Police chief looks to fill vacancy

The Saranac Lake Village Police Department hopes to a fill a vacancy created last summer following the resignation of James Keeler.

At Monday's regular meeting of the Saranac Lake Village Board of Trustees, Chief Bruce Nason said he hopes to hire an experienced candidate to replace Keeler.

"The individual has five-and-a-half years of experience as a provisional sergeant," Nason told trustees. "They are the officer in charge at the agency they're working at now."

Nason says the new hire will reduce mounting overtime costs at the police department.

Because it was a personnel matter, the board would not identify the potential new hire in open session.

Under the term's of a contract with the Saranac Lake Police Benevolent Association, the new hire would receive a starting salary of about $41,600, including benefits.

Officers without prior police experience get a starting salary of just under $30,000. After 26 weeks, that increases to about $36,000.

The board discussed the candidate further in executive session. Trustee Allie Pelletieri told WNBZ Tuesday he expects the board to make a decision during a special meeting next Monday.
