MIDDLEBURY - Middlebury finished fourth overall in the opening carnival of the season, the St. Lawrence Carnival, on Jan. 15 at Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington, N.Y.
UVM took home the title with 1,046 points, followed by Dartmouth (821), UNH (722) and Middlebury (669). The men's GS squad was tops on the weekend, finishing second overall with three in the top six.
In the men's GS on day one, first-year racer Robert Cone (Killington, Vt.) earned a podium appearance in his first carnival race, pacing the team in third place with a time of 2:03.54. Joining him in the top six were sophomore Bryan Shpall (Englewood, Colo.) in fifth (2:03.80) and senior Jacob Lund (Hudson, Wis.) in sixth (2:04.90). The following day, sophomore Andrew McNealus (Woodstock, Vt.) led the team in the slalom with a seventh place finish (1:33.07). Lund finished the race in ninth place (1:33.10), while Shpall placed 31st (1:43.10). Unfortunately for the Panthers, Poehling, Shpall and Cone were all forced to hike during the race, dropping them in the final standings.
Senior Lindsay Kraft (Coldstream, B.C.) led the Middlebury women in the GS on Friday, finishing the race in 13th place overall with a time of 2:13.04. Three spots behind was sophomore Christine Schozer (Winhall, Vt.) in 16th (2:13.44), followed by sophomore Bronwyn Oatley (Thornhill, Ont.) with a 24th place finish (2:15.71). Senior Tasha Woodworth (Carlisle, Mass.) was the top Panther in the slalom, placing 13th in 1:43.56. Senior Nicole Dvorak (Essex Junction, Vt.) followed in 16th (1:43.86), while Oatley placed 20th (1:45.03).
Junior Doug DeBold (Wayzata, Minn.) led the nordic men in the 10K classic race, finishing in 11th place with a time of 27:42. Junior Chase Marston (Charlotte, Vt.) finished the event in 15th place (28:02), followed by senior Jimmy Levins (Rutland, Vt.) in 18th (28:20). The men came on strong in the 15K freestyle race, finishing third overall. Marston led the group in ninth (41:41), followed by senior Graham Egan (Stuart, Fla.) in 15th (42:08) and rookie Ben Lustgarten (Burlington, Vt.) in 16th (42:17).
Sophomore Corinne Prevot (East Burke, Vt.) led the women's team in the 6K classical, placing 11th with a time of 19:47. Sophomore Hilary Rich (Andover, Mass.) was next for Middlebury in 20th (20:11) place, followed by first-year racer Emily Attwood (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) in 23rd (20:15). Prevot was again the top finisher in the 10K free race, coming in 13th overall with a time of 32:35. Rich followed in 30th (33:46), followed by Attwood in 31st (33:47).
