Chili Cook-Off set Jan. 29 in Monkton

MONKTON - On Saturday, Jan. 29, the Monkton Community Coffeehouse hosts the Second Annual Chili Cook-Off and Dance at the Monkton Firehouse located on States Prison Hollow Road.

A buffet meal of chili, cornbread, beverages and homemade apple desserts is available beginning at 5:30 p.m. Music for dancing begins at 7 p.m. with Starksboro's "In the Pocket." Dan Palmer, of Dan's Place in Bristol, said, "Great band. They'll rock the firehouse."

Admission is just $10, $5 for kids or seniors, or $25 per family.

All area cooks are invited to whip up a batch of their best meat or veggie recipe chili, mild or spicy hot. In addition to the amateur category, area restaurants will be competing for cash prizes and gift certificates.

Early entrants in the professional category include, among others, the Bobcat Cafe, Three Squares, Dan's Place and Bar Antidote. The hosts have assembled a crack panel of local judges who really know their chili, including professional chefs Bill Perta and Gary Olivetti, along with Patty Padua, winner of last year's amateur chili and Mt. Abe senior and die-hard chili enthusiast, Liam Corcoran. There will also be a popular vote.

The event benefits the Monkton Community Coffeehouse, which is in its fourth year of initiating and eagerly supporting events that bring Monkton together.
