The Saranac Lake Village Police Department this week reminded snowmobilers of a few local laws.
Chief Bruce Nason issued a release Thursday noting that snowmobiles are prohibited from operating in a number of areas within the village.
That includes: Main Street from Riverside Drive to Church Street; Church Street and Church Street extension; Broadway from Main Street to Ampersand Avenue; Bloomingdale Avenue from Broadway to Church Street extension; St. Bernard Street; Academy Street; and Woodruff Street from Broadway to Church Street extension.
Additionally, Nason says snowmobiling is prohibited on all village streets and roadways between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Snowmobiling is prohibited between midnight and 7 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
Snowmobiling on village streets and roadways is prohibited for anyone under the age of 16.
Nason adds that snowmobiles must be equipped with windshields, unless the rider is wearing goggles or a face shield, and all snowmobiles are required to be properly registered and insured.
Nason says snowmobiling along sidewalks or pedestrian right-of-ways is also prohibited - except when crossing the roadway.
Snowmobilers are prohibited from carrying a passenger unless the sled is specifically designed to carry more than one person.
Finally, Nason stresses that all snowmobilers are required to obey all village and state traffic signs, traffic lights and traffic laws. He encouraged anyone with questions to contact the police department at 891-4422.
