Science teacher takes icy plunge

LAKE GEORGE - A holiday wrap recycling drive at Warrensburg High School has resulted in environmental science teacher John Burns pledging to plunge into the icy waters of Lake George.

The contest, pitting the faculty against the students over the volume of trash collected, ended up with the students garnering the victory.

While the faculty did well, collecting a pile about 6 feet high and nearly seven feet in diameter, the WCS students collected a pile about 1`6 feet across and 6.5 feet high.

Burns pledged to jump into Lake George at 3 p.m. Saturday Feb. 5 in connection with the Lake George Winter Carnival's polar swim that day.

Meanwhile the students have been sorting through the holiday trash and pulling out substances that aren't recyclable, Burns said. the paper waste is shredded into home insulation, while other materials are recycled according to best practices recommended by authorities.
