Gas pumps return to Newcomb after 20 years

NEWCOMB - After a dry spell of roughly 20 years, gas has returned to the town of Newcomb with the reopening of Northwoods Diner and General Store.

Joe Garvilla of Newcomb assumed ownership of the diner after it changed hands a couple times over the past several years. Garvilla signed a three year lease with an option to buy in October of 2009. The doors reopened last June to offer Newcomb an eat-in dining option, to supplement the grocery sales of Bissell's Store and to reintroduce Cedar Pond Camp Ground to the local community. Gas pumps were installed this fall and are now operational.

Managed by Heidi and Craig Plumley, the Northwoods Diner and General Store had a busy summer - a fact the Plumley's hope continues through the winter. The recent opening of the snowmobile connector trail between Newcomb and Indian Lake has generated some business, according to Heidi. She hopes to see it increase as more snow arrives.

The Plumley's bring more than 15 years of business experience from The Gooley Sportsmans Club.

"We wanted to do a service to this town," Heidi said. "We wanted to provide citizens of Newcomb with gas and a place to eat."

The gas pumps have been well-received, according to Heidi. Despite the high price - just over $3.40 per gallon - Newcomb residents no longer have to drive to neighboring communities to fill their tanks.

"It is saving all of us a trip," said George Canon, town supervisor. "After saving the money and time it takes to drive to Long Lake or Minerva, the price is worth it."

Newcomb was once home to several gas options, but after Marvin Bissell of Bissell's Store closed his pumps roughly 20 years ago, no pumps were opened until recent weeks.

Northwoods General Store is also home to Heidi's Adirondack Pickle Lady samplings of jams, jellies, vegetables, meats and much more. Heidi also dedicates her home cooking experience exceeding 25 years to the full menu offered in the diner.
