At 125, Freshman Burgher newcomer Denver Berry pinned Tyler Streeter in one minute flat with a fast, muscular headlock. Berry, Coach Trapasso said, is improving by the week.
At 130 pounds, Hunter Roberts (ME) decisioned Masyn Morey with a score of 9-0. At 135, Rod Buyea (ME) decisioned Will Yarmowich with a tally of 15-6. Yarmowich, a varsity rookie, is one of the freshmen on the team who are making waves this year. At 140 pounds, Chris Robinson of Warrensburg pinned Brian Schenk in 3:32 in a hard-fought matchup.
At 145, J.T. Metz (ME) pinned Jerico Converse in 2:18. At 160, Lucas Nelson won a technical fall by running up a 18-3 score over Nick Krause (ME) in 4:38. At 171 pounds, Burgher Jack Eaton won by an injury default after his Morrisville-Eaton opponent Mitch VanWormer complained about his ribs and couldn't continue. At 189 pounds, Burgher Desmon Allen won by technical fall in 6 minutes over Colin Pearsall, which pleased Trapasso.
"I'm encouraged by this win," he said.
At 285 pounds, Tony Auricchio of Warrensburg decisioned his opponent Wyatt Morris 9-0.
Despite the 1-3 record for the day, Trapasso said his wrestlers are gaining skills and experience, and he has solid expectations for the Sectional tournaments to be held a number of weeks ahead.
"We still haven't gotten where we need to get," he said. "But when Sectionals roll around, we hope to be competitive."
