CHESTERTOWN - The phone rang off the hook this past week at Brant Lake Taxi as party-goers ushered in the new year. Traveling upwards of 1,000 miles in a nine-hour period, four taxi drivers of the firm gave safe passage to 214 people, a nearly 160-rider increase since the company's "Operation Safe Ride" began in 2008.
Brant Lake Taxi Manager Mike Turano said Tuesday that not everyone was aware of the free rides. "A group of people up from New York City were very surprised," he noted, but explained that many locals already knew about the program. This past summer, Brant Lake Taxi was given a letter of acknowledgment by the Warren County Sheriff's Office for its New Year's program, and were cited by Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward for general safe service to the upper Warren region.
With the support of local businesses, Turano hopes to continue the annual service. "We don't want to leave anyone stranded," he declared. "Of course we want to make sure they all get home safely."
