Northrop pleads guilty in sexual abuse case; sentencing set

A Saranac Lake man accused of fondling a young girl pleaded guilty in county court this week.

62-year-old Steven G. Northrop appeared in Franklin County Court Monday before Judge Robert Main Jr. He pleaded guilty to first-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child after originally entering a not guilty plea in September of last year.

Northrop was taken into custody in May 2010 by Saranac Lake Village Police after exposing himself to a 10-year-old girl and fondling her several times. He also barred the girl from leaving his residence and threatened her not to report the incident. Police were tipped off to the abuse after receiving an anonymous letter.

Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 28.

In other court news this week, Judge Main sentenced a Tupper Lake man to Franklin County Drug Treatment Court. 30-year-old Patrick E. Hache pleaded guilty to fifth-degree attempted criminal possession of a controlled substance last year.

Finally, 35-year-old Peter F. Kulik of Saranac Lake pleaded not guilty to charges of felony driving while intoxicated and first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. Judge Main scheduled a pre-trial conference for March 10 and remanded Kulik on $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond.
