Farley pleads not guilty in skateboard accident case

A Saranac Lake man involved in a fatal accident that resulted in the death of a local teen pleaded not guilty earlier this week.

44-year-old Bernard Farley of Floodwood Road appeared in Franklin County Court Monday before Judge Robert Main Jr. He was previously indicted by a grand jury for fleeing the scene of a fatal accident and second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

In June of last year, Farley was driving a golf cart without headlights when he entered the intersection of Floodwood and Hoel Pond roads. He's alleged to have struck 19-year-old Casey McHugh of Saranac Lake, who was riding his skateboard.

Farley left the scene and went to a friend's house, where he asked the residents to contact rescue personnel. He then returned to his own house, where he was later located by investigators.

Rescue personnel brought McHugh to the Adirondack Medical Center, where he was evaluated and airlifted to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vermont. He later died of his injuries.

Farley will appear in county court at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 24 for a pre-trial conference.

In the meantime, he'll be placed under the supervision of the Franklin County Probation Department.
