Two charged following music shop burglary

Police in Saranac Lake charged two people with burglary after investigating a break-in at a local music shop.

Saranac Lake Village Police arrived at the business early Friday morning and established that the suspects had smashed in the store's large front window, stealing a guitar that was on display.

Officers quickly spotted a trail of blood and followed it through the snow to a nearby apartment building. The trail brought them to the front door of one of the suspects.

Police arrested 19-year-old Kurtis G. Walrath and charged him with third-degree burglary, a felony. He was also charged with fifth-degree conspiracy and petit larceny.

Walrath suffered several lacerations as a result of breaking the music shop's display window, which allowed police to follow him to his residence.

Following an interrogation of Walrath, police were able to locate and arrest a second suspect, a 17-year-old male from Saranac Lake whose name has been withheld due to potential youthful offender status.

The teen was charged with third-degree criminal mischief, a felony, and fifth-degree conspiracy.

Police say the stolen guitar - which was recovered - was valued at well over $250.

Walrath and the teen were processed at the police department, arraigned in Saranac Lake Village Court before Justice Ken McLaughlin, and released under the supervision of probation.

Both are scheduled to reappear in village court to answer to the charges.
