Town of Chester Museum to host open house

CHESTERTOWN - An Open House at the Town of Chester Museum featuring enhanced exhibits is scheduled to be held over this weekend.

This free open house, sponsored by The Town of Chester Historical Society, is to occur from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday Feb. 25, and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 26.

The museum is located on the second floor of the Chester Municipal Center, state Rte. 9. An elevator is on site.

Many artifacts are on display, including many early photographs of people who lived in this area years ago.

Items on exhibit include books, clothing, home furnishings, commercial signs, old tools, and handmade furniture. The museum includes the Sumy Gallery with photos taken by the long-time local photographer Itsuzo Sumy. A new plaque displaying Museum directors' names, photos and years of service will be on display.

During the two-day open house, certain items will be for sale, including photo reproductions, picture frames, old furniture, blank note cards, old post cards with local scenes, and books by local authors depicting the olden days.

New this year is a 55-minute DVD entitled "Town of Chester/Seasons," featuring the hamlets of Chestertown and Pottersville in various times of year. Copies will be available for $15 at the event. Thereafter, the DVD may be purchased for $20 at various local businesses or ordered through the Historical Society at P.O. Box 34 Chestertown, NY. The amount includes tax and postage.

Society to celebrate 50th year

The Historical Society of the Town of Chester will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2012 and new members are always welcome, with annual individual dues at $15. The Museum will resume its regular weekly schedule as summer approaches, and the Society will offer free programs to the public during July, August, September and October. These events will be announced at a later date.
