Schumer to hype college tuition tax credit in Plattsburgh

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer will be in Clinton County today to promote a college tuition tax credit.

The Democrat from New York is making the appearance alongside SUNY Plattsburgh President Dr. John Ettling and Clinton County Community College President John Jablonski.

According to Schumer, the college tuitition tax credit provides middle class families with children in college a $1 tax credit for every $1 spent on tuition, up to $2,500 annually.

Schumer says, however, that less than 50 percent of eligible families claimed the credit on their 2009 taxes. He says last year's returns can still be amended, meaning North Country families are still eligible for some $38 million in savings.

The Senator joins college officials at 3 p.m. today at Plattsburgh State, where he will urge students and families to take advantage of the tax credit and urge other state colleges and universities to follow suit.
