Students aid firefighters

SCHROONLAKE - The Schroon Lake Fire Department has received a belated holiday gift.

Students at the Yandon Dillon campus of Champlain Valley Education Services in Mineville have donated $250 to the fire company.

The students raised the money by creating cookie and soup jars that they sold.

"The lesson was started as a project for the students to learn to give back to the community," teacher Joan Mcgowan said. "Students were asked to make suggestions as to what organization they would like to make donations.

"Dustin Woodward, a student in the class, is a member of the Schroon Lake Youth Fire Department and he suggested that the class donate funds to his fire department," she said.

Joining Woodward on the project were students Matt Aube, Lorrie Caron, Mike Ennenga, Dustin Mitchell, Eric Morin, Austen Stevens, Jen Tefoe and Chelsey Beeman.

"The students created cookies and soups in jar, packing the dried ingredients of Christmas cookies and soups in containers attaching cooking instructions," Mcgowan said.

The jars were sold to parents, staff and community members.

Woodward presented a $250 check to his fire chief, Larry Shiell.
