Schroon Lake teachers wear 'Jeans for Beans'

SCHROON LAKE - Schroon Lake Central School teachers are enjoying "casual" Fridays this academic year, but there is nothing casual about their concern over hunger.

The teacher association has asked instructors who wear jeans on Fridays to bring a food item for the Schroon Food Pantry.

The effort has been dubbed "Jeans for Beans," by teacher Mary Lou Shaughnessy.

Teachers are asking the community to join them in supporting the local food pantry.

"The Schroon Lake Teachers Association is committed to supporting our community," said Laura Corey, union president. "Please join the Schroon Lake teachers in this important endeavor. Donations can be dropped off at the pantry located behind the town offices on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon."

This is not the first time this academic year Schroon Lake teachers have reached out to the hungry in their community.

During the Christmas season Schroon teachers led a school-wide food drive that resulted in more than 20 local families receiving food baskets.

It was a successful and satisfying campaign, Corey said, but Schroon teachers want to do more.

"The SLCS Teachers Association has been making an effort this year to support our local food pantry beyond the holiday season," she said. "So, on Fridays, teachers wear jeans and they bring in a designated item that is needed at the pantry. Items have included, but are not limited, to pastas, canned food and hygiene products."

The Schroon Lake Teachers Association has about 30 members.
