Local farmers may benefit after court decision

A pending federal court ruling may place needed funds in the hands of Addison County' struggling dairy farmers. A Vermont U.S. District Court final ruling is expected to settle a 2009 class-action lawsuit that named several companies of monopoly and price fixing practices in New England's dairy market-Dean Foods, Dairy Farmers of America and Dairy Marketing Services. Farmers involved in the suit claimed that closed milk processing plants in the region was a way to gain a "stranglehold on the Northeast's struggling dairy market."
