The New Year is approaching rapidly, and there are a number of events throughout the North Country to get people into the spirit of 2012.
The Art Devlin Cup, symbolic of ski jumping excellence over three competitions, will be up for grab in Lake Placid, with action contining Friday, Dec. 30, at 12:30 p.m., when NYSEF hosts its annual ski jumping event on the 90-meter hill. Many of these jumpers are moving through the ranks with hopes of one day making the U.S. team in the future.
Daily admission to the ski jumping events is $15 for adults, $9 for juniors/seniors while children 6 and under enter free.
The world’s premier figure skating tour, “Stars on Ice,” is preparing a superstar ensemble of Olympic, World and National Champions from all over the globe for its 2011-12 season on Friday, Dec. 30 for a 7:30 p.m. performance, which will be made into a one-hour syndicated special “Stars on Ice presented by Smucker’s,” which will be shown on network affiliates across the country in the months of January and February.
This year’s tour features Olympic Silver Medalist Sasha Cohen; World and Canadian National Champion Kurt Browning; two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Ekaterina Gordeeva; 1998 Olympic Gold Medalist Ilia Kulik; Todd Eldredge; Joannie Rochette; Kyoko Ina and John Zimmerman; Ryan Bradley; along with Sinead and John Kerr.

Saturday, Dec. 31
All are invited to attend the 4th annual “Skate into the New Year” skating party on the Olympic Speed Skating Oval, a benefit for the Lake Placid Food Pantry, on Dec. 31 from 10:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m.
“The goal of the event is always to support the youth in the community,” said Christie Sausa. “Admission this year is $5 per person, plus a non-perishable food item for donation to the Lake Placid Food Pantry, if possible.” Students with valid school ID are granted free admission.
