Medicare open enrollment upcoming — volunteers needed

Open enrollment for Medicare is October 15th - December 7th.

This is a very busy time for us and we need help assisting clients when they call in to our office.

Anyone interested in helping would obtain information for plan comparisons.

Training will be provided on Medicare topics. If clients need more detailed assistance, there will be staff available to speak with them.

If anyone is interested in being a volunteer Medicare Counselor, please contact Heidi Palmer at Essex County Office for the Aging - 873-3814.

Guard against mosquitos

On August 15, 2011 State Health Commissioner Nirav R Shah, M.D., M.P.H.,

Urged all New Yorkers to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites after mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus have been identified in areas of the state.

Department of Health (DOH) recommends that New Yorkers should protect themselves when outdoors by using an effective mosquito repellent and wearing long pants and long sleeves.

When indoors, New Yorkers are advised to keep doors closed and ensure that window screens are in place to prevent mosquitoes from infecting homes.

People are also advised to take steps to reduce the number of mosquitoes around a home or property, eliminate standing water in yards, and make sure all windows and doors have screens that are in good repair. In addition, New Yorkers are urged to:

  • Dispose of used tires, tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots or similar containers in which water collects.
  • Drill holes in the bottoms of recycling containers that are kept outdoors. Make sure roof gutters drain properly and clean clogged gutters in the spring and fall.
  • Turn over plastic wading pools and wheelbarrows when not in use, and change the water in bird baths twice a week.
  • Clean vegetation and debris from the edges of ponds. Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor saunas and hot tubs.
  • Drain water from pool covers.
