open house set for Habitat home in Westport

As of Tuesday, August 16, 2011

— It is with great pride and excitement that the Ausable Valley Habitat for Humanity (AVHFH), serving Elizabethtown, Essex, Jay, Keene, Lewis, Westport and Wilmington, announces the completion of its tenth home on Goff Road in Westport, New York.

There will be an Open House on Saturday, Aug. 20 from 3 to 6 p.m. The home is located on Goff Road, Westport and is the first home on the right after turning from Rt. 9N.

This home has been modeled after the European LEEDS standards which creates a very energy efficient dwelling. The walls are 10 inches thick and extremely well insulated. There are triple glazed windows in this four bedroom house, of approximately 1300 square feet. The exterior siding is cedar shake shingles. Because it is so efficiently built, it will need only a small propane monitor to heat the entire space and includes a make-up air system and heat exchanger. This will be cost effective for our new family.

The construction manager, Schelling McKinley, and assistant Jim Davis have reported that they have had many able and willing volunteers during the construction of this beautiful home and all of us at AVHFH want to sincerely thank each and every person for their time, energy and expertise.

The AVHFH services Essex County providing decent, affordable homes to qualified partner families. Each selected family must provide 500 hours of volunteer labor on the new home, complete a financial planning course and repay a non-interest bearing loan which is provided by AVHFH.

The new Habitat home and future homes will be included in the Adirondack Community Housing Trust. This will guarantee that these homes will remain affordable to low income families for years to come, by controlling the partner selection process and home resale price.

AVHFH will be starting its 11th home and welcomes new volunteers not only in the construction process, but also to facilitate in the family selection process, public relations, fund raising and other administrative activities. For more information please call 873-9245 or visit www.avhabitat.org.
