Warrensburg Youth Football League ready to roll

— With the pending development of a town football field, the local youth gridiron program has garnered a heightened level of interest recently.

Warrensburg Youth League Football starts with a week-long afternoon skills clinic, followed by regular practice sessions beginning Monday, Aug. 22.

The program is open to children from first through sixth grades in Warrensburg, Chester, Johnsburg, Bolton, Horicon and other area communities where no football programs are offered. Last year, dozens of youth were involved, including a good number of players from upcounty towns.

All players interested in participating in the tackle program for third through sixth grade players should show up for the pre-season skills clinics, to be held Monday, Aug. 15 through Thursday, Aug. 18, or the “late registration” event scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19. The skill-development sessions begin at 5 p.m. daily on the Warrensburg Town Recreation Field. There’s a fee of $10 for non-registered players, but it’s free for those joining one of the teams.

All those seeking to participate should show up by 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22 to sign up, receive equipment, and start preliminary practice. The Warrensburg football program includes three teams, including two tackle football teams — one for third and fourth graders, and one for fifth and sixth, plus a flag-football team for children going into first through second grades. Registration fee is $45 for tackle football.

The flag football program, offered for first and second grade boys and girls from Warrensburg and surrounding communities, starts at 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12 on the town Recreation Field.

Football not only offers great exercise but it promotes for mental discipline, the youth coaches said. In past years, the Warrensburg team has included several girls with considerable skills and dedication.

Fees only partially fund the football equipment, as the Warrensburg league provides helmet, clothing, jerseys and pads. Generally, players are responsible to buy their own cleats, but the team has some available in various sizes for players that need them.
