Peru The race for Peru town council is beginning, with Geoffrey Spear running under the Republican ticket, and incumbents Brandy McDonald and Kregg Bruno running under the Democratic one, among others.
Spear was nominated at the Peru Republican caucus on July 14. Around 20 people attended, Spear said.
“My desire to run stems from my interest in keeping Peru a highly respected community in which to raise kids,” Spear said.
Spear said he would like to attract small businesses to the area.
“Money is tight; it would be nice to somehow increase the tax base,” Spear said. “We have some room to grow.”
Spear said his work at the Plattsburgh State athletic department has given him a good understanding of budgets. Additionally, he’s levelheaded, Spear said.
Spear declined to comment when asked to say how he would do a better job than his opponents.
He didn’t want to create a “me-versus-them” race, he said.
Brandy McDonald, along with Kregg Bruno, were nominated to run at the Peru Democratic caucus June 9. Thirty-eight people attended the event, McDonald said.
McDonald and Bruno are also running under the independent line, through a self-created party called Voice for Peru. McDonald additionally received the endorsement of the Working Families Party.
“I’ve always been a voice for the residents of Peru,” McDonald said.
McDonald said his goals were to keep spending and taxes down. He has been a council member for four years and deputy supervisor for the past two. McDonald is also chair of the Democratic Party of Peru.
While technically vying for positions, McDonald said he and Bruno were friends and would not be actively competing. McDonald had nothing to say against his Republican opponent.
“He comes from a good family,” McDonald said, adding he’d coached Spear’s son in baseball for four years.
Bruno has been a council member for two years. He said the council had kept the tax rate stable during that period, which is a “big achievement.” He said he constantly listened to residents’ concerns and brought them to the attention of the council.
