HHHN will no longer accept insurance provider Aetna

— Hudson Headwaters Health Network has announced that, as of Oct. 1, it will no longer accept Aetna health insurance plans at its 13 health centers.

After this date, patients with Aetna health insurance will be asked to pay from their own pocket when they receive care at Hudson Headwaters' health centers.

Hudson Headwaters operates health centers in Mineville, Ticonderoga and Schroon Lake.

Medicare Advantage plans offered by Aetna will not be affected by this change. Hudson Headwaters’ patients who receive health insurance through work should check with their employers for options that may be available. These include switching health plans or arranging for Aetna to reimburse the patient directly.

“We’re ending our contractual relationship with Aetna because that company is unwilling to reimburse health care services at the same rate paid by other major health insurers in the region,” said John Rugge, M.D., CEO of Hudson Headwaters Health Network. “Hudson Headwaters needs to receive payment that allows us to provide and maintain high quality care for our patients.”

Rugge said that he is surprised that Aetna has made a decision to undervalue primary care.

“Every major insurer working with Hudson Headwaters recognizes the value provided by comprehensive primary care services,” he said. “People who have access to primary care services generally have better health, and make fewer visits to emergency departments and hospitals. If you truly want to hold down health care costs, you want to support primary care.”
