— Happy Fair Week, everyone. Unfortunately, family obligations are taking me out of town this weekend, but here’s a shout-out to my fellow Dogwood Bread Company employee, Kalika Hopkins, who’ll be entering again this year. Good luck, Kalika!

Those who aren’t at the Derby on Saturday night will most likely be up at the Country Club, where, as I mentioned last week, the Depot Theatre’s 20th Annual Gala Benefit will take place starting at 6 p.m. This is the theater’s major fundraising event each year, and the money they raise helps them produce all those wonderful shows that bring so many people to our fair town.

Did you know that the first Monday night of each show’s run is Name Your Price night? The creative minds up at the Depot want to make sure the experience they offer is available to all. Remaining Name Your Price nights this season are Aug. 15 for “Wicked City” (a spoof on hard-boiled mysteries), Aug. 29 for “Fully Committed” (a wacky one-man comedy), and Sept. 12 for the world premiere of “The Cabbage Patch” (a romantic comedy that’s a real crowd pleaser).

Another cool part of Depot programming is the Tonight Only series, which features special local talent appearing on selected Wednesdays. This week, on Wednesday Aug. 17 at 8 p.m., Chris Conte, bassist and crooner Chris Conte will perform jazz standards. For information on this or any of the Depot events mentioned above, call 962-4449 or visit depottheatre.org.

A different creative enterprise that brings people to town each summer is the Spirit of Place art exhibit and tour program, centered at the Heritage House, but taking in art studios all around Westport and neighboring communities. Their successful opening in July filled the Heritage House with a big crowd of local artists and art lovers. The art show and silent auction at the Heritage House will close on Aug. 23 at 3 p.m. Get in there and bid on some stunning art while there’s still time.

Congrats to this week’s Heritage House $50 raffle winner, Felix Haskins, and to last week's winner, Lillian Garvey Little.
