Modified winner Martin Roy, center, receives the winner's trophy from Della Auto Group at Airborne Speedway last weekend.
South Plattsburgh Martin Roy swooped around leaders Greg Atkins and Leon Gonyo with nine laps to go and went on to his second straight DIRTcar Modified win on Della Auto Group Night at Airborne Speedway Aug. 6.
The 30-lap main event was a bruiser that took nine cautions to complete. Clean restarts were the issue. The race was red-flagged after three laps when Matt Woodruff got up on the wheel of Cam Grady’s machine and slammed into the turn four wall. Woodruff was not seriously injured.
Roy started 15th in a 28-car field, gained some spots early by attrition, and then passed a trio of cars on the backstretch as they were navigating a back marker to move into eighth on Lap 10. At that point, the top-5 running order was Atkins, Gonyo, Jimmy Ryan, Mike Reyell and Craig Reyell.
George Foley got up to second with a late charge in the outside lane. A final caution on Lap 26 gave him a shot at the win, but Roy pulled away at the drop of the green and won by three car-lengths. Atkins held off a late charge from Vince Quenneville to claim fourth. Positions 6-10 went to Mike Phinney, Andy Heywood, Jimmy Ryan, Pierre Berthiaume and Chris Cayea.
On Lap 21, Gonyo was sizing up Atkins for a possible pass for the lead, when Roy moved farther outside to pass them both. “It was a crazy race,” he said. “I tried to wait for a while for the trouble to stop. ”
The former track champion had spent the afternoon qualifying for a NASCAR Canadian Tire event at Trois Rivieres. “It was important for me to get back to Airborne tonight and try to keep racing for the championship. Thanks to all the fans who come out and support the track. ”
