Keeseville Column 8-13-11

— Congratulations to the Village of Keeseville for the steady hard work which earned the village $50,000 in the Pepsi Refresh funding. This money will be applied to the ongoing renovations at the J.C. Park. People interested in helping out with the project should contact Tonia Finnegan. Contact the Village Office for more information. Now I must admit and call on readers to clear something up for me. I have recently seen the Park referred to as “Jay Cee,” “JC” and “J C.” Can anyone tell me which is correct and what is the history of the park? Again, very exciting to see a small community like ours get something of this nature and further exciting that good use will be made of the money.

The Keeseville Free Library opening reception for the local artists exhibition will be Thursday, Aug. 11 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and the show will run in library from Aug. 11 until Sept. 9. The exhibition and sale will include local artists Anne Pember, Gail Kemp, Andrea Knight, Penelope Clute, Gary Bezio, and Jackie Sabrouin among others. The mediums included are oils, acrylics, pen and ink, pencil, pottery, fine woodworking, textile, and photography. Last year’s show was my first to see and was very impressive.

There will be a ceremony at the Evergreen Cemetery coming up this month. The cemetery has more than 55 Civil War veterans buried there. GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) markers are being placed on the gravesites of these veterans. Greg Furness furnished the first 16. The Keeseville BPOE #2702 and the Keeseville VFW Post 1505 have donated the remaining markers. The Woodsmen of the World have donated American flags to all of our deceased Armed Force Service members as well.

A special short presentation of these markers will be held near the flagpole on Saturday, Aug. 27 at 9 a.m. in the Evergreen Cemetery located at Main St., Keeseville. Hopefully, many people will come to honor those who served and sacrificed for the many freedoms that we are benefited with today. My own thank you to everyone who has taken the time or effort to acknowledge such deserving people.

Enjoy the August weather and stay safe and well.
