Foot bridge to be replaced

ELIZABETHTOWN -The foot bridge that leads between Water Street and Park Street will be getting a makeover starting Monday.

The deconstruction of the bridge is set to take place on May 2, with supplies and materials starting to arrive on May 9.

The project, which is expected to take about 35 construction days, will be funded by grants from the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Places and the state Department of Health's Creating Healthy Places Program.

"This has been in the works for about a year," Jessica Buehler of the Essex County Department of Public Health said. "We have two main grants that are supporting the project to replace the foot bridge."

The Essex County Ways and Means Committee voted April 25 to authorize the purchase of materials through the Creating Health Places Grant in the amount of $82,500.

Buehler said that the project calls for the complete dismantling of the steel superstructure and wood, which would be replaced with a new steel superstructure and a composite lumber/plastic support to cover the bridge and stairs on both sides.

"We are looking forward to getting the project started," Buehler said. "We have an old photo of the bridge and we are going to track the progress and get a photo when the new bridge is completed."

The foot bridge will be closed starting Monday, May 2 for work to begin.
