Boiler explodes at Ticonderoga Armory

TICONDEROGA - A steam boiler in the Ticonderoga Armory Community Center exploded at roughly 9 a.m. on April 20. A janitor was in the building at the time but not in the basement where the boiler was located. No one was injured.

The blast was heard blocks away. Rising pressure warped the boiler's casing and blew its door off. What caused this rise, and the resulting explosion, is unknown. The boiler, which dated back to the 1960s, was covered by insurance.

The building will have no water or heat until the boiler is replaced.

Town Supervisor Debra Malaney said Ticonderoga Central School and the Ticonderoga Youth Commission, which had offices in the Armory, would be able to return shortly.

"We're thinking that everybody should be back in by next week," Malaney said April 22.

This does not include ACAP's nutrition program, which had served meals from the Armory, and which Malaney said would not be able to return for about a month.

The Armory, which was constructed in the 1930s, was recently purchased by the town of Ticonderoga from New York State.
