No decision on dispatch; local officials to tour Malone center

Officials from the village of Saranac Lake and the town of Franklin will travel to Malone this week to tour Franklin County's emergency dispatch center.

Village trustees are currently mulling the possibility of transferring fire and rescue dispatch services from Saranac Lake to Malone.

But several towns that receive emergency service from Saranac Lake have opposed the potential change, including the town of Franklin, which passed a resolution of opposition late last month.

Trustees have already met with county lawmakers and Emergency Services Director Ricky Provost. But village Manager John Sweeney says members of the Franklin Town Council recommended taking a physical tour of the dispatch center in Malone.

Sweeney says he'll join Trustee Allie Pelletieri and Franklin Supervisor Arthur Willman for a tour Tuesday morning.

Franklin officials say dispatchers in Malone are unfamiliar with village streets and roads in surrounding communities.

That unfamiliarity could lead to delays in delivering emergency service and put public safety at risk, officials say.
