LAKEGEORGE-This may be the year that the Warriors recapture the glory of the stellar 2009 season, which included a stunning comeback victory to capture the Adirondack League championship.
Last season, there was a considerable change in personnel and the season tally fell short of goals. But this year, the seasoned veterans are back - sports fans know they'll put up a good fight yet again against Fort Ann, which won the 2010 state Class D Championship in baseball.
The pitching looks exceptionally strong, with a three-man rotation which includes J.D. Jenkins, a third-year varsity player who led the league last year in strikeouts; the athletic Jack Clark, who catches, pitches and is a key offensive threat; and sophomore Connor McCoy, who the coach said had a "lights out" 6-1 season in 2010 as a freshman, Hoover said.
Offensively, the team will benefit from those eight 2010 starters who know how to either get on base, or simply crush the ball. Anchoring the lineup and third in the batting order will be J.D. Jenkins, who led the team for hits in 2010 with a .343 average. He's got plenty of assistance from Alex Liucci and Kyle McCabe, who both batted .340 in 2010.
Last week, Coach Hoover watched his players goof off, tossing a grapefruit-sized ball through a basketball hoop in their gym.
"With the loss of practice time, it's been stressful," coach Erik Hoover said.
Clark said he appreciated Hoover's knowledge and focus, adding that the team was actually enjoying a little relaxation before the shortened season gets under way.
