Inaugural Daffest adds more

SARANAC LAKE -Artists, fashion, outdoors activities and more are being added to the lineup for the three-day Daffest.

The event, which takes place in Saranac Lake starting on Friday, April 29, and running through Sunday, May 1, will feature plenty of activities for the family, including the soapbox derby race.

"The test run for the derby was a complete success," said Cherrie Sayles, event organizer. "Two very talented 10-year-old racers took to the track, along with Bob Scheefer who hasn't been in a race car since his North Hudson days in the mid to late 1960s."

Sayles said that Scheefer tested the track three times in the yellow Carcuzzi Car Care soapbox racer.

"It just didn't have enough Zoom-Zoom to beat the fancy Pink Car crafted by the Saranac Lake Youth Center," Sayles said.

"Now we know what to tweak and we'll be ready for our field of 50 racers," sponsor and event Chair Bob Bevilacqua of Carcuzzi Car Care said.

Events that have been added to the festival include Plein Air Artists, who will be painting throughout the village during the event; the Massive 2011 Fall Plant Off, with bulbs available at the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce booth at Riverside Park; a Junk to Funk fashion show at the Sparks Athletic Complex on Saturday, April 30; Lawn Chair Ladies on Saturday, April 30; the Paul Smith's College cake decorating demonstration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 30; demonstrations by the North Country Community College Wilderness Recreation Leadership Program on April 30; the Blue Line Sport Shop fishing clinic on April 30; the Adirondack Lakes and Trails Outfitters kayak and canoe demonstration on April 30; and the High Peaks Opera and open house at Will Rogers on April 30.
