Villagers still eligible for free energy efficient upgrades

Homeowners and renters in the village of Saranac Lake can still take advantage of a state program that offers free energy efficient upgrades.

That's according to Jeremy Evans, director of the village's Office of Community Development.

Evans says many renters and homeowners can sign up for no-cost energy efficiency improvements through the New York State Energy Efficiency Program, so long as they qualify for the state's income guidelines.

Those making less than 60 percent of the state median income are eligible to enroll in the program. Owners of rental properties with tenants meeting those guidelines may also apply, Evans notes.

The program is focused on cost-effective electric reduction measures, particularly lighting and refrigerator replacements. It also seeks to make other cost-effective home energy improvements, like better insulation, air sealing, and additional health and safety measures.

The state is also providing education for on-site energy usage.

Once a property is accepted into the program, a private contractor is authorized to conduct an energy audit of the property. Afterward, the contractor makes recommendations on potential improvements and, pending approval, makes those improvements free-of-cost.

Evans says applications for the program are available at the village offices.
