Seven-year-old in need of kidney transplant to combat health issues

ELLENBURG CENTER - Jasmine Brunton has always been considered a miracle by her parents, and now they're hoping for a miracle for her.

The 7-year-old was born against the odds to parents Tonya and Jeremy Brunton who, Jasmine's mother remarked, were surprised when they learned they would become parents.

"I was told when I was younger I couldn't have kids. Then, at 31, I was pregnant. She's my miracle baby," said Tonya.

However, Jasmine's miracle came with strings attached.

"She has had problems with her kidneys since the days she was born," said Tonya.

One of Jasmine's kidneys wouldn't grow and the other wouldn't function properly.

"She's on kidney dialysis three times a week in Burlington," said her mother.

However, the Bruntons hope that will soon change when Jasmine's father gives her a unique gift.

"Jazzy will be getting one of her dad's kidneys," said Tonya, noting her husband will donate a kidney in a procedure this June.

Though the more than two dozen procedures Jasmine has undergone have been covered by medical insurance, Tonya noted additional expenses such as travel and lodging have mounted. And, with the upcoming transplant that will put her husband out of work while he recovers from his donation, more expenses are expected to add to the pile.

That's where the Bubba-Bapp Foundation comes in. The local charitable group, headed up by Bubba Gonyo and Cindy Bapp, will host "Jam'n for Jazzy" at Therapy Night Club and Sports Lounge, 14 Margaret St., this Saturday, April 16, beginning at 11 a.m. The event will include a dart tournament, pool tournament, talent show and hot dog eating contest, with all proceeds to help the Bruntons. Entertainment will be provided by Lucid.

For more information contact Gonyo at 534-8109.

Donations may also be sent to the Bruntons, 6649 Star Road, Apt. A., Ellenburg Center N.Y. 12934.
