College golf matches start this week

CASTLETON-The Castleton State College golf team has announced its Castleton Golf spring schedule for 2011. The Spartans will be playing in three events in April to wrap up the 2010-11 campaign.

The spring slate kicks off April 9-10 when the Spartans travel to North Dartmouth, Mass., to compete in the Hampton Inn Spring Invitational at Allendale Country Club.

The following weekend Castleton travels to Cranston Country Club in Cranston, Rhode Island to compete in the Johnson & Wales Spring Invitational, before finishing the season with the Elms College Invitational April 21 at Westover Golf Course in Granby, Mass.

Junior William Banfield (Montpelier, Vt.) who became the first Castleton golfer to earn All-New England honors at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association championships in late October will lead the team this spring.

Banfield was also named North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Player of the Year award which he earned by winning the NAC Championship. Banfield was tied atop the NAC leader board at an even-par 72 after day one, and followed with a three-under 69 on day two to earn medalist honors.

Joining Banfield this spring will be returners Cody Ball, Jordan Goodwin, Sam Morse, and Cameron Wood. New to the squad this spring are Zack Kulpa and Ross Herzog.

Also new to the squad is Bob Grace, who takes over as Head Coach for the spring season after Butch Paul stepped down this winter. Grace is a long-time member of the Castleton Physical Education faculty and an active member at Lake St. Catherine Country Club in nearby Poultney.
